Frenetic, sprawling, all-encompassing. These all describe the atmosphere at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
But among the fast and furious energy of the festival, intimate performances spring up. One such moment came when songwriter Katie Von Schleicher stepped inside the Spire Van with her guitarist Adam Brisbin. The performance of her song “Mary” made for “a small, gentle moment amidst the chaos and fun of SXSW,” wrote NPR Music’s Bob Boilen.
A tender song, “Mary” features plodding electric guitar, melodies that gently intertwine. With lyrics like “If Mary’s in my mind, gotta get her out,” it strikes a pleasantly unsettling tone.
“For me, 'Mary' is a place and time rather than a person, childhood and youth and the strange space I've found in going back to the house where I grew up in Maryland to make records now,” wrote Von Schleicher in a note to Bob Boilen.
